Bleak Walker

Bleak Walker is generally considered to be the best option for a damage-oriented Paladin.

That said, I’m not sure that creating a single class damage-oriented Pillars of Eternity 2 Paladin is a good idea. No matter how damage oriented you make a Paladin, it will never come close to the damage output of any other class.

But if you want to increase the survivability of a Rogue, Cipher or Monk, Bleak Walker makes an excellent multiclass option.

Darcozzi Paladini

Darcozzi Paladins have their Lay on Hands ability upgraded to give a flame shield to the recipient of the heal. This is pretty mediocre.

You almost certainly won’t notice it in practice, except as a visual cue that your Paladin healed someone successfully. When it comes to Pillars of Eternity 2 Paladin subclasses, this one’s pretty forgettable.

Shieldbearer

Shieldbearer is your go-to subclass for any tank due to its bonus to engagement while equipped with a shield.

Like the Darcozzi Paladin, Shieldbearer gains an improved Lay on Hands, but its improvement is much more significant because it grants immunity to being knocked out for several seconds.

Goldpact Knight

Goldpact Knight is another good option for a tank build, as it upgrade Sworn Enemy to also increase the Paladin’s armor.

There’s nothing much else to be said about that; if you want increased armor on your tank, go for this. If you want increased engagement, go with Shieldbearer.

Kind Wayfarer

Kind Wayfarer is, in my opinion, the overall best Pillars of Eternity 2 Paladin subclass as it turns Flames of Devotion into a team-wide lifesteal. Great to pair with the Chanter’s bonus healing phrase.

If you’re leaning into the offhealing capabilities of the Paladin, Kind Wayfarer is almost certainly the way to go.

Steel Garrote

Steel Garrote is another great option for a tank, especially if you’re multiclassing with a class capable of inflicting afflictions or if you have a party capable of putting out a lot of afflictions.

The main thing about the Steel Garrote subclass is it gains passive lifesteal whenever attacking any enemy with an affliction. This dramatically increases survivability, generally much moreso than the Goldpact Knight’s extra armor.

Pillars of Eternity 2 Paladin Multiclass Options

Pure Paladin

Unlike most classes, Pillars of Eternity 2 Paladins don’t gain too much by single-classing aside from the associated power level. They gain a decent healing spell, a slightly improved buff and a questionably useful AoE healing aura.

Of course, if you multiclassed a Paladin with, for instance, a Chanter, they would also gain decent healing spells, buffs and healing auras and those things would be much better.

Paladin doesn’t tend to be a main class in the first place, you typically multiclass another class with Paladin to increase its survivability.

Chanter

Chanter/Paladin is one of the best support options available in the game, especially if you choose to use the Troubadour subclass. The amount of healing this class gets most likely outclasses Priests and definitely outclasses Druids and on top of that, it has all the survivability that being a Paladin offers.

Fighter

If you’re thinking of making a dedicated tank character, it’s hard to go wrong with Paladin/Fighter, especially if you use the Shieldbearer and Unbroken subclasses. Even if you don’t go that route, though, a Paladin/Fighter of any subclass variation will be very difficult for enemies to make a dent in and will serve you well in terms of keeping your team alive.

Conclusion – Pillars of Eternity 2 Paladin Guide

If you want a tanky support unit, go with Chanter/Paladin. If you want a pure tank character, Fighter/Paladin is a great option. There’s very little incentive to single class Paladin.

Typically, the rule of thumb is that adding the Paladin in a multiclass increases survivability, so add Paladin to any character you want to be able to take a few hits.

That about covers it when it comes to the best Pillars of Eternity 2 Paladin Subclass and Multiclass options. Check out thegames sectionfor more game guides and other game-related content, andclick herefor more articles related to Pillars of Eternity 2.
